School Curriculum

The children are taught in two age groups, known as Key Stage 1, ( 5-7 years) and Key Stage 2, (7-11 years).

We are concerned with the all round development of your child; we aim for each pupil to be confident and successful.

The curriculum is firmly rooted in Christianity.

Delivery of the National Curriculum is carefully planned, monitored and evaluated.

We involve a variety of approaches to teaching and learning appropriate to the needs of the children, providing continuity and progression.

English, Mathematics, Science and Information Technology are known as the core subjects.

History, Geography, Art, Design and Technology, Music and Physical Education (P.E.), R.E and Modern Foreign Languages are known as foundation Subjects.

Music and singing are enjoyed by the whole school, and we have achieved the Sing Up Silver Award for putting singing at the heart of school life.

The wider curriculum includes Personal and Social Education, Citizenship and Health Education, of which Sex & Relationships Education is an important part.

In addition, we offer a variety of school clubs. We also take the two top junior classes on an annual residential visit.

House System

The school operates a house system.

Pupils are awarded points for their house in reward for good work and behaviour.

Special Educational Needs

Children with special needs are discretely supported and enabled to access the full curriculum; the school’s calm, inclusive and loving ethos enables those with social and emotional needs to thrive. SIAS 2010.

Our school follows the code of practice on the identification and assessment of Special Educational needs. Initial responsibility for children with special educational needs lies with the teacher who is helped by the co-ordinator for special needs and then by county advisory staff. Parents are kept informed at all stages and are involved with the development of the Individual Education Plans.

Assessment and Attainment Levels

The children are tested annually in English, Maths and Science using materials supplied by the Schools Curriculum Council. At the age of seven and eleven, pupils take Standard Attainment Tests (SATs) in English, Maths and Science.

As parents/carers, you are kept informed of progress in a number of ways; you are invited into school each term to discuss your child’s progress with the class teacher, and a written report is distributed in the summer term.

Curriculum events are planned throughout the year to keep you informed of current practice. You are always welcome to come and discuss your child at any time, but it is better that you make an appointment to do so.

School Visits

Organisations such as the Fire Service and the Community Police visit the school and give informative talks. The children regularly visit places of interest, which bring the curriculum alive. The staff and governors actively seek to include such activities in school life, but we are only able to offer these opportunities when financial support is given by parents.

Homework

We believe that some homework will help your child to achieve his/her potential and is good preparation for secondary school. In addition it clarifies the strong links between home and school and the need for both parties to work together to ensure a good education for our children.

At KS1 the children are expected to read at least three times a week and we ask for your full support in this. They will also be asked to learn a few spellings each week and occasionally complete a little research to support their topic work.

At KS2 the children will be expected to read at least three times a week and learn spellings and tables for a test later in the week. Every weekend the children will be set a piece of written work. Once or twice a year (at the discretion of the teacher) your child will be expected to complete a research project in support of History or Geography work.

Homework Policy

Parental Involvement

We warmly welcome help from parents or family members. Parents regularly help with reading, art and craft, school visits or with extra curricular clubs. If you are interested in sharing your talents and time please contact your child’s class teacher. It may be that you would prefer to help in another class – we appreciate all offers.
