Vibrant
worship and meaningful religious education together with a strong
partnership with the parish church are at the heart of the school’s
distinctive ethos. RE
is seen to be an important element in the school’s Christian
distinctiveness. The curriculum is firmly rooted in Christianity and
Ofsted found that it also “provides good opportunities for pupils
to know about different faiths and cultures”. There
is considerable investment in global education resulting in
respectful and accepting attitudes towards those from other faiths
and cultures. SIAS
2010.
The
basis of our teaching is rooted firmly in Christianity, but we do
teach other major world faiths in order to ensure that our children
gain an understanding of the multi-faith, multi-cultural world in
which they live. In addition we endeavour to offer our children
opportunities to develop their own spirituality, and a sense of awe
and wonder about the world around them.
We
aim to enable our pupils to become skilful and confident
communicators, both orally and through the written word. We want
them to be able to read for pleasure and to conduct research. We
actively encourage children to take books home to share them with
their families. English is taught both directly and indirectly
across the whole curriculum. Neat handwriting and tidy presentation
is expected and rewarded. There is a Literacy Hour every day.
Numeracy
Our
maths schemes of work adhere closely to the government’s National
Framework for Numeracy. It is our aim that our pupils become
confident with number, shape, data handling, analytical problem
solving and investigative work, and that they enjoy the practical
application of mathematics in everyday life.
Science
We
believe that children learn best when they are actively involved in
their own learning. Therefore we provide a syllabus where children
are offered opportunities to observe, experiment, predict, discuss
and record their findings.
Information
Communication Technology
Technology
is an integral part of children’s lives. Computers are used to
teach word processing, data handling, modelling, communication and
presenting and designing. Specific programmes are used to support
cross-curricular teaching.
Design
and Technology
Design
and Technology provides children with an opportunity to design,
plan, make and evaluate a variety of products using various
resources. These include construction kits and throw away items such
as boxes, card and fabric. Food Technology is also experienced
throughout the school.
History
and Geography
These
subjects are taught through carefully planned topics where the
emphasis is on a ‘hands on’ approach and research. We make the
widest possible use of local knowledge, places of interest and
artefacts. Wherever possible we include a field visit or invite a
theatre company into school to bring the topic to life.
Art
Pupils
learn about style, mood, design and line. They experience working
with a wide range of media such as pencils, paint, charcoal, clay
and pastels. The children are taught how to mix colour and how to
draw and paint from direct observation. Sewing skills and collage
work are also included in the curriculum. The children study the
work of various artists, past and present and from many different
cultures.

Music
Singing,
composition and rhythm are all taught. Musical appreciation and
awareness of various composers and their works is included at all
levels. There are regular opportunities to take part in concerts
and plays throughout the year. You may also wish your child to
take part in music lessons with staff from the Derby Music
Partnership who are weekly visitors to the school.
Sing
Up Silver Award
Dear
children and staff at Newbold CE Primary School,
Congratulations!
I am delighted to tell you that you have achieved your Sing Up
Silver Award. You have really shown that singing is at the heart of
your school life by providing so many lovely videos and photos of
what you have been learning.
I
particularly liked the videos you shared under the ‘Whole school
community’ section. It is great to see that you have been
spending time performing to and singing with other members of the
wider community. It looks like you get some really good responses
to this, which is fantastic – well done!
I
noticed that in a couple of videos you have given children the
opportunity to help lead a song themselves. This is a really good
idea, and if you continue to do this then you will have fulfilled
one of the criteria for the Sing Up Gold Award. Have you thought
about working towards the Gold Award next year?
Well
done to all of you for your hard work – keep it up!
Best
wishes,
Emily

The
children experience a variety of activities, which include
gymnastics, games and dance. Swimming is available at KS2. The
children are encouraged to work well within a team, co-operate
with others and use their initiative.

Health
education including Sex & Relationships Education is a shared
responsibility with parents and is very important for the personal
and social well being of young people. It aims to help our children
understand their own bodies, how they are growing and changing and
how they will change in the future. It also aims to enhance the
emotional and social development of our children, helping them to
understand the benefits of caring relationships and to be aware of
social pressures and possible dangers.
The
class teachers will be responsible for the work, which are
integrated into timetabled class topics, sometimes with the
assistance of the School Nurse and Health Visitor. Parents have a
right to withdraw their child from specific Sex Education, but not
if it is part of class science work and therefore, the school’s
curriculum. In order to do this they must firstly approach the
Headteacher in order to discuss the matter and then write to the
Headteacher following discussion to formalise their decision.
